Job Description
Case Manager/Counselor
Reports to: Principal
Reporting requirements: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (40
hours per week, some evening and weekend hours)
Description: The Counselor/Case Manager provides
ongoing counseling support, advocacy, and guidance
to our students in order to help them deal with
their personal, legal, and social service needs,
especially those that interfere with their ability
to succeed academically. The Latin American Youth
Center YouthBuild Public Charter School’s mission is
to transform the lives of high school drop-outs
through an educational curriculum that combines
academics with vocational training, employability
skill-building, and community service to prepare
students for college or the workplace while they
work to create housing for the city’s low-income
residents. The schools population consists of young
men and women ages 16-24 years old, who reside in
the District of Columbia. The school currently has
an enrollment of 65 students and will grow to 100
over the next 2 years.
Duties include:
- Assess personal needs of YouthBuild students and help find resources to meet these needs
- Provide individual and group counseling to students
- Assist in the development and delivery of a Life Skills Curriculum
- Advocate with human service, health, court, and criminal justice systems to resolve issues facing young people
- Teach Life Skills classes, which include topics on financial self-sufficiency and financial management, time management, goal setting, communication and conflict resolution.
- Provide feedback to students regarding their performance in life skills, through progress reports, assessments, portfolio presentations, and end of the semester grades.
- Make home visits, as appropriate, to assess needs and support young people
- Identify and expose youth to cultural, political, and social events or activities that may take place after work hours, and organize youth participation
- Maintain complete and accurate records, case notes and database related to assessments and services provided
- Coordinate and lead case management meetings
- Assist in the coordination of the YB PCS Mentoring Program
- Conduct intakes for the entire caseload
- Administer monthly drug test to student in your case load; initiate appropriate school procedures for students’ whose test results are positive for drug use.
- Provide assistance in resolving disciplinary issues.
- Monitor and oversee the retention of graduates who the workforce or post-secondary education
- Attend all scheduled staff meetings and take an active role
- Represent YouthBuild at local and national conferences and events.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Bachelors degree or equivalent
experience in appropriate field with at least three
years experience in counseling and/or case
management for at-risk population. Fluency in
Spanish recommended. Must have the ability to
establish rapport and relate sensitively to a
multiracial and multicultural group of young people.
